Prom is short for promenade concert, a term which originally referred to outdoor concerts in London’s pleasure gardens, where the audience would stroll about while listening to the music. The term derives from the French se promener, “to walk”.
The Proms was the brainchild of Robert Newman, whose ambition was to enable people to enjoy ‘serious music’. He was well known for organising and financing musical events. Sir Henry Wood, founder-conductor of the Proms, believed in making the best-quality classical music available to the widest audience possible. The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society would like to adopt this idea and the Concert at the Alameda Theatre will be a fitting way to introduce GIBRALTAR PROMS in Gibraltar and thereby to raise the profile of our supporters in a high impact and quality manner.
We believe in making the best quality classical music available to the widest audience possible, but we still have a long way to go.
